Dear Gary,

I have never been to Cheraw, but I have often heard it referred to.  If you
haven't located the present town (?) it is on US route 1, just south if the NC
line, on the Great Pee Dee River.  The "Old Cheraw District" was a territory
of some eight present counties - Chesterfield, Darlington, Florence,
Georgetown, Horry, Marion, Marlboro and Williamsburg. As you will note, this
territory embraces both the Great Pee Dee and the Little Pee Dee River and
stretches from the border of NC near Cheraw to the ocean.  A pretty vast area.
It seems to have been the corridor for many arriving in SC in the early 18th
century.  There is a much praise book, "History of the Old Cheraws" by The Rt.
Rev. Alexander Gregg, published in the 19th century, but subsequently
expanded.  It is available in many libraries with Genealogical sections, and
has been reprinted.  I perused it once, but did not delve into it since it was
not related to my research. A related book that is touted as a campanion to
the "Old Cheraws" is ""Rambles in the Pee Dee Basin", by Harvey Tolevar Cook,
originally published in 1926, but still available in reprint.  I know nothing
about this one, but it may be worth checking out.

You might want to contact the Pee Dee Chapter, South Carolina Genealogical
Society, PO Box 236, Latta, SC 29565 . They could propbably give you some
guidance. The South Carolina Archives Department, 1430 Senate St., Columbia,
SC 29201 has been very helpful for me in the past. I hope thjis is of some use
to you.  Happy hunting.

With best wishes for you and yours this Christmas Season and throughout the
New Year. Dwight
