Description: This important record effectively represents the history
of Swiss emigration to the Americas in the eighteenth century. Originally
located in the State Archives of Zurich, it contains the ship lists of
emigrants to the American colonies from Switzerland, in particular to the
Carolinas and Pennsylvania. Each list contains, where possible, the names of
family members who departed, their birth date, baptism date, the town or
province of departure, the date of departure, the name of the ship, and
their destination. This is an invaluable research tool for anyone with Swiss
ancestors who emigrated to America between 1700 and 1800.

Emigrants in the Eighteenth Century to the American Colonies. Washington,
D.C.: National Genealogical Society, 1920.

In addition to these we find indicated the names of the Swiss owners of 13
other farms. Of these, the Müller's, Nussbaum's and Buhlmann's (Peter), who
are still widely represented in Bernese territory, may come from many
different communes. Kistler (Rudy) should probably be traced to Aargau
rather than to the little city of Aarberg or to the commune of Hasle near
Burgdorf. The Hopf family may have come from the little cities of Erlach or
Thun, the Haberstich family probably from Aargau. Z'öbrist (now written
Zobrist (Caspar) suggests the communes of Frutigen and Brienz, Heimberger
(now written Heimberg) Oberwil in Simmenthal or Radelfingen near Aarberg.
Huntziger (now written Hunziker) (Rudi and Samuel, each with a farm) is a
family which is common in Oberaargau and Aargau. The Raubly's, the Wyssmer's
(Johann) and the Werger's are still to be accounted for. No facts which
would help in determining their origin have come to light.
