According to the Carter County Heritage book and in an article by Barbara
Jean Hobson, the original German name was Crantzdorf.  Dietrich Crantzdorf
lived in the Palantinate area of Southwest Germany and had two sons who
emigrated to Pa. via an English vessel, The Thistle.  One son named Johann
Nichel Crantzdorf moved to NC and his son Johann Michael Cranzdorf b. 1728
moved to Carter County, Tn. and changed his name to Grindstaff.
I have no doubt that this is true since my ancestor Gorge Kramlich who
emigrated from the same area in Germany moved from Pa. to Sullivan Co., Tn.
and changed his name to George Crumley, an old English name.  To this day
there are two lines of Crumley in Carter and Sullivan Co.s, one English and
one German.
