It was great to hear from you, Cuz! I was wondering how everything was going.
What a wonderful gift from your son. Thank you for thinking of us and asking for
an opinion, I asked my mom and aunt as well. They both felt perhaps it should be
the way he signed his name because that might indicate what he thought was correct.
In looking at his 1870 Declaration of Intent to become a citizen (abt. 2 years after he
arrived in America), his name on the papers show a spelling of Heye (with two dots over the y)
Janssen (two "s" and a coma over the 2nd "s"). His signature on the paper bears the same
spelling and annotations. His Will in 1892 show a spelling of Heye Jansen Aden,
the annotations are not there and it looks like he dropped one "s" in his middle name.
I would think that the name should be Heye Janssen (or) Jansen Aden..if they inscribe
annotations, then perhaps the two dots and coma may or may not be included ..depending
on how significant they are. The Hiye spelling might have been a misinterpretation of a
skinny "e" with the two dots over the "y" looking like a loosely dotted "i".
I searched the database for the memorial wall http://www.wallofhonor.com/search_f.asp
with the following results:
American Immigrant Wall of Honor.
"aden" was found 2 times
Name Origin Panel
Louis and Fannie Aden Simkin Minsk, Russia 407
Aden and Mary Schaar Francis Wales and Germany 601
(I don't believe either are our relatives..)
BTW, if I haven't sent a copy of the Will or Declaration of Intent and you'd like one
let me know and I'll get them to you.<smile>
I think it's wonderful that Heye and Cente Habben are going to be honored in such a way.
Light, Love and Laughter to you and your family,
Sandie

Dear Sandie,
My son, Geoff, gifted me with a certificate of remembrance at
Ellis Island for Xmas and I need your advice on whether I should record
the advent and memorial of Heye's arrival at Ellis Island in his given
name, i.e., the Prussian spelling and the one on his tombstone- Hiye
Jansen Aden or use the anglicized version of Heye Jansen Aden, which is
the way it is listed in the following reference: Glazier, Ira A. and
Filby, P. William, eds. Germans to America...1850-1872(Library Call
Number 973 W2ger. You might also see if the folks in Nebraska have any
thoughts on this. I still have not confirmed that he or Cente Habben
Aden have not already been honored. If they have, I shall use the
certificate to honor them by designating the contribution to The Ellis
Island Memorial in the name of our branch of the family.
I want to get the ball rolling on this as I look forward to one
of my son's rare visits this week.
Hope all is well. Cuz Gary
