Dear J,M, J &B, and Bernice,
As I mentioned to some of you, I would be forwarding some files
out of storage from a defunct mailbox so don't use this e-mail address
for permanent recording. I hope you are able to read the written
material. Congratulations Jim on your initiation into the wonderful
world of genealogy! Midlife career change in store for your future?????
The enclosures were provided by another "cousin" and are
self-explanatory, but may raise questions in and of themselves. When she
is up to it, we work together on this stuff.
I will probably send the snail mail package out on Monday.
Allow seven days for it to hit Lake Havasu as it travels through Alaska
by dog sled and is air mailed through Montreal! So will it arrive by the
time you head back to Wyoming? If not, let me know by Monday. Boy, are
your kids ever going to be impressed when you return home with the
pedigree all done, charts and all! I can keep a secret. BTW, when do you
leave Arizona? Seriously......Luv, Gary
P.S. Bernice, I am web enabled through MSN. What I can't do with webtv
is spread sheets and open some attachments. RE: chasing Heye down in
OSTFRIESLAND, I would probably start with Deutshe Post or the Registrar
in Bremen to get some idea of villages around that area and see if they
match what he wrote down for his place of birth in the church and then
go to the area and check on the leads through the "village lineage"
books. The Germans have a name for it - something like oosterpolitik or
something like that. BTW, I presume that Fred's father was Hiyo- correct
me if I'm wrong. Is Gary D. still in this area? HAPPY HUNTING ALL!

Dear Gary,
Nice to make contact! How did I find you? Well..I guess I'm still a good
tracker <grin> Actually I ran a trace on domains for a Gary "C" Aden and
your email was the only one returned, so I thought I'd take a chance.
For your enjoyment, I just scanned in two copies of photos that I thought
you might like to see. One is of Mimke Aden when he was older and the other
was a copy of an enlargement from a tin-type of Mimke and Hiskea "Katie"
(Wilts) on their wedding day, January 3rd, 1874 in Woodford county,
Illinois. The pictures weren't mine, but I was lucky enough to get a xerox
copy of them which is what I put on my scanner. It's the first time I saw a
picture of Mimke or Katie, I was pretty excited.
You say you have pretty much of the line this side of the Atlantic? I'd
love to compare notes..some of the info I've found has errors in them. I
have also figured out why I kept stumbling with when Katie came over and
the ship she supposedly came on. I noticed from a letter that you sent
Aunt Thelma (dated, July 17, 1996, which she was kind enough to give me a
copy of) that you also had problems with that piece of the puzzle. I now
believe that parts of the information from a paragraph in Hiyo's notes
[which were typed by Sylvia (Aden) Stout in 1936 while Hiyo dictated to her
and later retyped and copied in 1941/42 by Thelma (Aden) Wise] were
confused. The original paragraph reads that Hiskea came over "in the spring
of 1871"..this statement appears to be the most accurate, as the letter
later states that she worked 3 years as a hired girl in Illinois. The next
record is of her marriage to Mimke in 1874 and one month later moving to
Nebraska. The rest of the paragraph stating that she came over on the Elba
and the extended reference to it later being sunk is where the
confusion/errors come in. After posting to a newsgroup, I just received the
following information (from several people, but I only copied one)
regarding the Elba/Elbe:

Hi Sandie,
There appears to be some confusion between two different ships or different
dates.
There was an "Elbe" built in 1849 for the Hamburg America Line. This was a
385 ton sailing vessel which carried 20-1st and 200-steerage passengers. She
sailed between Hamburg and New York until 1864 when she was sold and renamed
"Sarah". In 1866 she went to Danish owners and was renamed "Ansgar", sold to
Russia in 1879 and wrecked on 14.11.1900.
The second "Elbe" was built in 1881 for North German Lloyd. This ship was
much larger, 4,510 gross tons, and had capacity for 120-1st, 130-2nd and
1,000-3rd class passengers. She sailed between Bremen, Southampton and New
York between 1881 and 1895. This was the ship which was in collision with
the British owned "Craithie" in the North Sea on 30.1.1895 and sank with the
loss of 332 lives.
However, neither of these ships were around in 1871, and I have no record of
a ship named "Elba".
regards
Ted

Given this information, I must conclude that Katie did not come over on
that ship..perhaps another relative later arrived on it, though. Any other
thoughts?
Do you use any genealogy software? Or is everything on paper? If you do
have it on the computer, we may be able to exchange files. I noticed you
use webtv for your email..is that instead of a computer hookup? What sites
have you found on the web? I've found quite a few wonderful ones!
Oh...soooo many questions! <grin> It's exciting though, isn't it?!
BTW..In case you were trying to make the connection of where I fall in
line..loosley translated it is:
Mimke/Hiskea Aden..Hiyo/Effie Ellen Aden..Wesley Spencer/Mabel
Aden..Erma(Aden)/William Joseph Pantano...me
Well..I've taken up quite a bit of your time..so I shall close for now.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Sandie
P.S. Someone penciled in a note beside your name saying that you had Dr. in
your name [I think it was to distinquish between you and another Gary Aden
in the family] If this is correct, what type of Dr. are you..if I may
ask....<smile>
