Nearest Ancestor: Mary OLDHAM Tarpley(6/25/1712 North Farnham,
Richmond, Virginia- 1781 96th District, South Carolina) married James
TARPLEY, Jr., 1733/34, King & Queen County, Virginia, 5th great
grandmother,/ John IV/ John III/ John II/ John Old World Roots, Immigration,
and New World Settlement: I have been able to learn nothing about this
family twig in the old world except our John Oldham was born in England
and died about 1680 in Westmoreland, Virginia. He fathered John II by Abigail
?( ? ?- ? ?). He married Mrs. Oldham 1648 in Farnham Parish, Richmond County,
Virginia and fathered two more children. He married Mary Smith 1654 in
Orange County, Virginia.
John II(1640 Northumberland, County, Virginia- 1705 Virginia) was
married first to Abigail(MNU) in St. Stephen's Parish, Northampton,
Virginia. He married Abigail MOSLEY( ? ?- ? ?) about 1663 and by her had
four children, the oldest being John III.
John III(1/28/1663 or 1664 in St. Stephen's Parish, Northumberland,
Virginia- 1/20/1707 Virginia) married Sarah HARWOOD( ? ?- ? ?), daughter
of Henry Harwood. The couple had seven children, the fourth being John
IV.
John IV(1684 Richmond County, Virginia- 9/6/1762 North Farnham Parish,
Richmond County, Virginia) married 1704 in Richmond County, Virginia to
Sarah Jane HOWE( ? ?- ? ?) and had three children, the last being Mary
Oldham whose prominent husband, James Tarpley, Junior(5/8/1692 North
Farnham Parish, Richmond County, Virginia- 1781 Brunswick County,
Virginia) was propietor and owner of Tarpley's Store which survives on
its original site to this day on Governor Square in Colonial
Williamsburg. He is famed for his presentation of the Bell to the
Burton Parish Church, Williamsburg, Virginia in 1761(according to
"Records of Burton Parish Church" by Dr. William Archer Rutherford. A
tablet placed in the tower of the church has the following inscription:
"The gift of James Tarpley to Burton Parish 1761" engraved on the bell
in the tower. Both the store and the church where the leaders the
Revolution worshiped are tourist attractions.
Recently, Mary herself has acquired some fame as the object of
genealogical curiosity. Because of a mistake by a family source, the
wife of James Tarpley, Jr., was incorrectly listed as Mary Campe or
Mary Camp. Like many genealogical errors, it was repeated in other
source documents, etc.. An article entitled "Who was Mary, wife of James
Tarpley of Richmond and Brunswick Counties, Virginia?" by Margaret T.
MacDonald, Chapel Hill, North Carolina, published in the Virginia
Genealogist, Volume 37, Number 1, Jan.-Mar., 1993 corrected this mishap.
