Mr. Bob Hammond, Burke County Museum  Dear Mr. Hammond,

We just got off the phone re my efforts to find the location of
a marker or monument which commemorates the Battle of Brier Creek. You
referred me to the Public Library in Sylvania, Screven County, but
invited an e-mail inquiry to help me with obtaining more information on
my 4th great granfather, William who along with his brothers, fought in
that engagement from Captain Terry's District in Wilkes County.

Obtaining docmentary evidence about him is exceedingly difficult. Thus
far, we have been able to find him owning property in Burke County from
the Atlanta Chronicles' Index of Headnight and Bounty Grants circa 1790,
but this could be the sme land that later is recorded in Louisville,
Jefferson County. Around 1803, he uprooted his family(four sons were
born in Burke and Jefferson County probably), and moved to Jackson
County where he died in 1806. He and his wife attended Thyatira
Presbyterian Church in that area(documented). He received land grants as
a disabled, pensioned veteran judging by listings in the Cherokee Land
Lottery(1825).

Family lore says that he and his brothers came from Ireland in 1770. I
attempted to connect him unsuccessfully to ships, e.g. the Hopewell, via
Savannah to the Queensborough settlement. The only Allen listed there
was John Allen with a  wife and four daughters.  The only brother's name
I am reasonably certain about would be Robert who is listed with him in
military pay records. I mentioned that his name is listed as the owner
of Block 555 (I think) on the Revised Land Plats of BIG Creek, Burke and
Warren Counties in the Louisville Public Library. I believe he had land
on Rocky CReek. Of course, any info would be welcome, but my primary
goal is to determine where he came from across the ocean and how he got
here. I didn't pursue leads in Burke County when I visited the area
about three years ago, because I was discouraged from doing so having
received the impression that records from that period had been destroyed
by fire. I thank you for your invitation and look forward to your reply
hoping that your health improves in the meantime or sooner! With kind
regards, I am Gary Carl Aden, 2403 Corona Court, La Jolla, California
92037

P.S. His wife's maiden name was Elizabeth Barclay whom he  married in
1786. She was probably Scotch-Irish and was raised In Lancaster, South
Carolina . Their four boys given names were: William B., Robert,
Eliazar(Beverly) and Thomas G.
