BARCLAY Site Summary:

I. Old World

     A. England
           (1) Berkeley Castle-constructed as a fortress in AD 1153 by
Lord Maurice de Berkeley and the Earls of Berkeley located just off the
A38 between Bristol and Glocestershire which is owned and serving as the
residence for the 25th generation of Berkeleys to live there. 

           (2) Berkeley Sqare, London, in the Berkeley Family until the
1940's when it was sold to provide funds for the continued maintenance
and upkeep of Berkeley Castle.

    B. Scotland
           (1) Towie Barclay Castle, Parish of Auchterless,
Aberdeenshire- constructed in the 14th century and sold to the
government in 1755 by the Barclays. The government sold it to a private
investor in 1970.

       C. Ireland
           (1) Ballymoney, County Antrim, Ireland nicknamed "The Capital
of the Route" which is the presumed old world home and embarkation point
for Major John Barkley(1719-1796) on a date sometime before 1754 for
America.

II. America 

       A. South Carolina
           (1) Lancaster, South Carolina, Old Waxhaws Churchyard-
gravesite of Major John Barkley. The following inscription is on his
tombstone: "SACRED TO THE MEMORY<OF MAJOR<JOHN BARKLEY<WHO DIED JANUARY
10<1796  AGED 76 YEARS<LECTOR MEMENTO TIBI MORIENDUM EST.<"
There is a Masonic emblem on his tombstone, a shield upheld by two
birds; symbols: L, star, ladder, hourglass.

       B. Georgia
            (1) Jefferson County, Georgia, Louisville Public Library- On
the wall, there is  decor entitled REVISED MAP OF LAND PLATS OF BIG
CREEK, BURKE AND WARREN COUNTIES UNTIL 1796, THEN JEFFERSON COUNTY This
map shows the name of William Allen as the owner of Block 555. 

            (2) Jackson County, Georgia- About 5 1/2 miles Northwest of
the City of Jefferson lying Northwest of the Intersection of I 85 and US
Route 129 is the Allen Creek area. It is also believed to be the
vicinity of the original(now defunct) Allen "plantation" and near to the
Montgomery place where it is suspected  William Allen may have been
buried. However, he may have also been buried in a desecrated, old
cemetery located in the same area which can easily be found.
