BARCLAY, BARKLEY
Fifth Degree Twig
Nearest Ancestor: Elizabeth "Betsy" BARCLAY Allen SMITHWICK( before
1768, probably North or South Carolina- after 1835, probably in Forsyth
County, Georgia), 4th Great Grandmother; married 1786 at ? to first
husband, William Allen( c 1755 in British Isles- 1806 Jackson County,
Georgia); remarried June 11, 1814 at Jackson County, Georgia to Robert
Smithwick, Hon.( ? ? - 6/9/1835 Forsyth County, Georgia); fifth child
and daughter of Major John BARKLEY "John of Antrim" ( 1719, probably
Ballymoney, County Antrim, Ireland, but another researcher has suggested
Wales- January 10, 1796 Lancaster District, South Carolina and buried in
the Churchyard at the Old Waxhaws Church) and ? Margaret GREY( ?
Ireland- ? Carolinas) or ? Agnes ? ( ? Carolinas- 1816 Carolinas) ?
Agnes MONTGOMERY( ? Carolinas- 1816 Carolinas),/ Undiscovered Old World
Pedigree on both paternal and maternal sides. Maternity is clouded by
absent records, several John Barkleys with confusing literary
references, courthouse burning in Lancaster District and throughout the
Carolinas, and the possibility Major Barkley was married more than
once. There is an unrefuted literary reference to Margaret Grey as the
mother of two children fathered by John Barkley who had emigrated from
Ireland to America roughly around 1750. The burial site for my 4th Great
Grandmother is unknown. Elizabeth and her sister, Margaret, spelled
their surname BARCLAY, the only two of the ten children in the family to
have modified their last name insofar as I can determine.
